At The Douglas Company, we believe safety isn’t just a requirement—it’s a responsibility. As a commercial general contractor with nearly five decades of experience, we understand the inherent risks that come with construction and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of construction safety on every project.
Our comprehensive safety program begins long before the first crew steps on-site and continues throughout the life of the project. Through proactive pre-job planning, strict project enforcement, and ongoing accountability, we aim to build not just structures—but a culture of safety.
Pre-Job Planning: Safety Starts Before the Work Does
Our safety process begins with subcontractor prequalification. Before awarding any trade partner, we conduct a thorough review of their safety program, past violations, and current Experience Modification Rate (EMR). This allows us to verify that every subcontractor we work with shares our commitment to a safe working environment.
Once selected, each subcontractor is required to submit a Site-Specific Safety Plan tailored to their scope of work. These plans outline logistics, identify potential high-hazard activities, and help us coordinate between trades to reduce risk across the entire jobsite.
Project Enforcement: Training, Oversight, and Accountability
Before any work begins, every subcontractor employee must attend a mandatory Safety Orientation. During this session, our general contractor safety protocols and each trade’s Site-Specific Safety Plan are thoroughly reviewed. Upon completion, attendees receive a project-specific hard hat sticker, providing visual confirmation that safety training has been completed—helping us quickly identify and address any non-compliance.
To maintain a consistent focus on jobsite safety, we implement several ongoing enforcement measures:
- Weekly Safety Checks: Each Project Superintendent conducts regular safety inspections to identify potential risks and implement corrective actions.
- Weekly Safety Audits: During site visits, Project Managers perform detailed audits and collaborate with Superintendents to resolve any issues.
- Monthly Safety Audits: Our dedicated Safety Officer visits every project monthly to conduct formal safety reviews and follow-up with site teams to drive continuous improvement.
- Non-Compliance Reporting: If safety violations are observed, we issue formal notices to the responsible subcontractor and work together to implement immediate corrective actions.
A Safer Jobsite, A Stronger Team
At The Douglas Company, safety is not just a checklist—it’s part of our culture. These practices help ensure that every worker on our jobsites returns home safely each day. And for our clients, they provide peace of mind that their project is being managed with integrity, care, and professionalism.
