50 Years of Constructing Buildings That Matter
On January 12th, 1976, The Douglas Company was founded with a vision that challenged the traditional construction model of the time.
Most contractors operated within a small geographic radius, competitively bid every project, self-performed major trades, and focused primarily on equipment and yard operations. The Douglas Company took a different approach.
From the start, the focus was on relationships over transactions — working as part of a team with owners and architects to design and build projects that were economical, yet exemplary in their markets.
The concept worked.
By 1978, Engineering News Record recognized The Douglas Company as a fast startup. The company specialized in shopping centers and traveled nationally—from California and Oregon to projects throughout the East—building negotiated work with repeat clients who valued collaboration and accountability.
Built for Developers
From day one, our clients were developers—entrepreneurs with everything on the line. They needed a contractor who would protect their investment, understand risk, and prioritize long-term success over short-term wins.
That developer mindset shaped our culture. It still does.
As markets shifted in the late 1970s and 1980s, diversification strengthened the company. Multifamily projects supplemented retail work, often through HUD-supported programs designed to stimulate development.
In 1981, we completed our first nursing home—a 120-bed facility in Grayling, Michigan. That project marked the beginning of what would become a defining focus for The Douglas Company: senior living construction.
By the mid-1980s, we were delivering congregate living, assisted living, and memory care communities—at a time when the senior housing industry was still emerging. The decision to focus on senior living proved both strategic and meaningful, aligning our work with an important societal need.
Growth Through Discipline
In 1981, we expanded to Orlando, Florida after identifying it as one of the highest-growth states in the country. Establishing a presence there required perseverance and strong execution—but it laid the groundwork for decades of growth.
When leadership transitioned in 1992, the company sharpened its focus on disciplined systems, exceptional execution, and long-term relationship building. That commitment produced consistent results. Over the next decade, revenue grew from approximately $30 million to $120 million, while maintaining best-in-class margins.
The lesson was clear: experience matters, but process makes experience scalable.
A New Chapter: Employee Ownership
In 2021, The Douglas Company became a 100% employee-owned company through the establishment of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
Employee ownership formalized something that had long existed in practice—an ownership mindset. Our teams think differently because they are owners. Decisions are made with long-term value in mind. Accountability runs deeper. Collaboration is stronger.
For our clients, that means a partner fully invested in protecting their capital and delivering results.
Continuing the Legacy
In 2023, Bruce Douglas was named President of The Douglas Company, continuing the company’s generational leadership while reinforcing its commitment to disciplined execution and client-focused growth.
Today, we’re guided by our core purpose – Constructing Buildings That Matter – and our core values:
- Figure It Out: Find ways to say “yes”, make the numbers work, solve problems, and be creative.
- Client Satisfaction: Keeping commitments to our clients through reliability, quality, and service
- Employee Empowerment: We have the utmost value for our people; we invest in their growth and empower them to make a difference
- Execution Through Proven Systems: Delivering high-quality projects by following processes and paying attention to details.
- Integrity: Doing the right thing and building trust.
Fifty years later, we are proud of where we began—and energized about what lies ahead.
The next chapter is already being built.
